RCC Member Spotlight: Anne's Inspiring Journey


At age 61, a DXA scan led to a diagnosis of osteoporosis. Despite being petite with a small frame, I was unprepared for this news, as nutrition and cardio had always been priorities in my life. My rheumatologist advised starting Prolia injections immediately, but I wanted to explore holistic ways to manage the condition first. Reluctantly, the physician agreed to give me one year to stabilize or improve my bone mineral density (BMD) before starting medication. Determined to see if I could delay or avoid Prolia, my journey to reverse osteoporosis began.

While researching the condition, I discovered advanced diagnostics used in Europe to assess bone quality—a factor often missed by standard DXA scans, which only measure density. To establish a baseline, I traveled eight hours for a REMS Echolight scan. Interestingly, the results showed that while my density fell within the osteoporosis range, my bone quality remained strong.

The most significant takeaway from my research was that the best way to improve bone density is to increase the strength of the muscles surrounding the bones. Resistance training is essential, as it creates the necessary stress to stimulate new bone tissue growth. This is where Sam’s expertise through his Rock Fitness program proved invaluable. Since I had no prior lifting experience, Sam developed a personalized approach tailored to my needs, beginning with the basics: mobility, flexibility, and balance. Additionally, Amy’s knowledge of nutrition and physical therapy was instrumental in rounding out my program.

I started with one private session and two small-group sessions per week. In my one-on-one sessions, Sam added specific exercises tailored to my weaknesses and provided nutritional guidance. The small groups offered a wonderful way to socialize and provided the motivation to keep working hard. Sam is excellent at managing both settings; even when participants have different abilities, he focuses on each individual’s form. He is continually introducing new exercises to challenge us, ensuring no one ever gets bored.

We soon developed a comprehensive wellness plan encompassing exercise, nutrition, hormone therapy, and supplements. Together, we set short-term milestones that tied back to my ultimate goal. Sam is exceptional at creating a roadmap to help individuals attain their specific objectives, always ensuring the goal remains personal to the client.

Sam’s expertise was also instrumental in helping me conquer several mental challenges. Because I was new to lifting, he ensured every exercise was performed correctly, frequently offering cues to improve. This not only reduced the risk of injury but ensured maximum effectiveness. He provides the perfect amount of critique—always encouraging, yet directive.

Another hurdle was my perspective on weight. My weight had been consistent for forty years; however, after six months of lifting, it dropped too low and my strength suffered. Sam stepped in immediately, reminding me that to build muscle, I had to eat more. He was key in helping me realize that the scale is not the best indicator of progress. To support muscle growth, I needed more fuel, specifically carbohydrates.

Sam’s approach focused on healthy eating and macronutrient splits, helping me overcome the mental barrier of "eating more." He performed caliper readings every six weeks, which were incredibly encouraging. Even though the scale was going up, my body fat percentage was decreasing and my muscle mass was increasing. I was becoming leaner and more defined. This provided the reassurance I needed to view weight gain as a positive step.

To support this growth, I committed to lifting four days a week plus cardio. As we added complex movements—like deadlifts, hip thrusts, and Bulgarian split squats—the workouts became both more challenging and more enjoyable. Sam consistently adjusted the plan to maximize my results without requiring more time in the gym. He also encouraged consistency, helping me recognize that I actually feel better when I maintain my routine even while traveling.

Since beginning this journey eighteen months ago, I have gained approximately five pounds of muscle. My latest DXA scan shows a remarkable 10.9% increase in BMD in my pelvic region. Additionally, my REMS scans confirm strong bone quality, with an average density increase of 6.1% in my femurs and a slight increase in my spine. While these results are encouraging, I know there is more work to do. My T-scores have improved to the very edge of the osteoporosis range, and I am confident that by continuing to build muscle, my bone density and strength will improve even further.

Beyond better bones, I am much stronger, have more energy, a higher metabolic rate, and lower stress levels. Working out with Sam has even reduced my cholesterol to an excellent level.
